Strymon Fairfax: The Warmth and Dynamics of a Tube Amp in a Pedal
The Strymon Fairfax is no ordinary overdrive. This pedal is built around a miniaturized tube preamp circuit with a Class A power amp and a clever analog emulation of an output transformer — the components that give a tube amplifier its characteristic warmth and compression. The result is a pedal that feels and responds like a real amp, not an effect.
The sound of the Fairfax ranges from soft and harmonically rich at low Gain settings to fully saturated and expressive at higher values. The variable Sag control adds an extra dimension: at low values, the pedal behaves mildly and slightly compressed; at maximum Sag, the JFETs can misbehave and gate the signal — leading to sputtering, fuzz-like sounds full of character. Thanks to the internal voltage increase from 9V to 40V, the Fairfax has the headroom and dynamics you expect from a real amp.
The Fairfax is an analog overdrive/drive pedal with Gain, Level, and Sag controls. It operates on standard 9V power and fits on any pedalboard. Whether you're looking for a clean boost with extra harmonic richness, or a fully saturated drive for rock and blues: the Fairfax delivers it with a honesty and dynamics rarely found in a pedal.
